My name is James A. Dennis, 36 years old, and an INNOCENT death row inmate in Pennsylvania. In 1992, I was convicted of the shooting death of a young female high school student in Philadelphia - (allegedly for a pair of gold earrings) - A senseless crime I did not commit.
The killer was described as being 5' 9", 5' 10" or taller than 5' 10", 170-190 pounds, dark skinned African American male - and at the time of this offense I weighed a mere 125 lbs., stood all of 5' 4" in height. At the time of the shooting, I was in a different location of Philadelphia, telephone records could have easily substantiated my whereabouts. But the attorney never subpoenaed the telephone records to be introduced at trial. Which would have established that I made phone calls to wife and friend.
I was the lead singer of an R&B group called "Sensation". We garnered first prize in several talent shows, sang at weddings, churches and travelled a variety of places in the country doing gigs. At the time of my arrest, we were ready to sign a contract for a record deal at a major record label. Why would a young artist well on his way to stardom commit such a petty crime? I ask you. There has never been a thorough investigation in my case - nor did I have competent representation at the trial.
