This is a plea to all who have discussed criminals prisons, the impact it has had on you. Whether you have a family member or friend in prison, been a victim, or concerned about crime in general. A Russian novelist wrote: "The degree of civilization in society can be judged by entering its prisons."
I realize you lead busy lives, and as long as no one you know or love is affected by the Texas prison system, you really don't want to know the details. Being at this site, may be you do. I also realize, you don't put yourself in the position of someone going to prison. The whole world of choices that defined you as a human being is suddenly taken from you...
Entering the Texas prison system means deprivation that is difficult to believe until you are living it. Hardened as I was, I was disillusioned and shocked, that so many guards had such a pronounced attitude, that prisoners are something less than human. Add the gruesome experiences of prisoners being raped by prisoners and guards alike, the cruel and justifiable fear of prisoners, the wholesale loss of privacy, poor quality of medical care, serving cold, poor nutritional food, and lack of proper exercise.
It is no longer punishment, it's human rights violation, outside the law. Justice in Texas is not measured nor thoughtful, its prisons are harsh, teaching prisoners more hatred and violence, than remorse.
